“Humans love to control how they feel. Booze and coffee have been perking us up and lubricating social situations for millennia. Mood-enhancing technology, on the other hand, usually tries to emulate a cup of joe or a glass of wine but without the need for rinsing your liver. I’m generally OK with pumping chemicals into my body, but with a few mood-changing gadgets catching my eye in the run-up to this year’s CES, I thought I’d give some a go. The hope was that I could avoid the usual uppers-and-downers routine that a week in Vegas demands.” - James Trew, Deputy Managing Editor, Engadget
Q: Why is scadrial prime example planet to invent space travel. Is its allomancy/ferruchemy/hemalurgy combination more suitable for that kind of technology or do they have other incentives to invent space travel other than regular technology development? Is it related to the intervention of unknown metal/shard/beings we saw?
A: There are a bunch of reasons.
The most technologically advanced of the planets (Taldain) is extremely isolationist because of its Shard, while Harmony is very interested in the progress of his people.Scadrial has an advanced understanding of metallurgy, and for many years was quietly open to visitors from across the cosmere. In the modern era, that has enhanced. It’s a much safer place to visit than, say, Sel, Threnody, or First of the Sun.
There are other reasons, too, which we’ll get into as the world progresses. Having some prominent cosmere-aware people pulling strings behind the scenes is a big help. If you know other worlds are out there, and are populated, then you’re more likely to push toward space travel.
My main theme is the extension of the nervous system in the electric age, and thus, the complete break with five thousand years of mechanical technology. This I state over and over again. I do not say whether it is a good or bad thing. To do so would be meaningless and arrogant.
I’d love for Jk to flesh out more what technology does and doesn’t work for wizards. We know they were able to adapt radios and from my re-read so far, Harry has an alarm clock in Hogwarts in Chamber; Harry, Hermione and Dumbledore have watches in Prisoner; and Mundungus claims to have a Jacuzzi in Goblet (we know he doesn’t but he must have had some sort of interaction to know what that means).
i’m not sure why everyone thinks anarchocommunism would be some technology-less society where we live … completely isolated from everyone ….
we could massively improve public transportation and transportation of goods if we weren’t so intent on fucking each other over to survive, and were instead interested on working together to survive in the best possible way.
How do you define what’s real and what’s not? Is Virtual Reality just the next generation of gaming technology, or is it something more? In this episode of The Good Stuff we take a look at the science behind Virtual Reality, and how its able to trick our brains into thinking that we’re somewhere else.
